Plants vs. Meats: The Case For Eating Organ Meats For Health w/ Michael Kummer

In this episode, I am joined by Michael Kummer, a former professional track athlete

In this episode, I am joined by Michael Kummer, a former professional track athlete turned CrossFitter. Michael is a healthy living enthusiast who helps people improve their health and wellbeing through his widely-read blog and popular YouTube channel.

He shares his 5 core pillars for health which include:

  • Sleep
  • Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Stress management
  • Limiting Environmental Toxins

These are all important to maintain good health, but one thing you’ll find interesting as he takes us through these pillars is his compelling argument that organ meats are one of the healthiest food sources humans can eat.

Health Benefits of Organ Meats

Organ meats are excellent sources of essential micronutrients in much greater quantities than any other source. Organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart, brain, lungs, tongue, intestines, pancreas ear are all nutrient-dense foods that offer numerous health benefits. They may seem odd and even tasteless for our palates, but there are some recipes to prepare them in a way that makes them tasty.

For those who can’t find good sources of organ meats or those who can’t eat them for any reason, an organ meat supplement will be your best alternative.

When we limit ourselves to muscle meat only, we miss out. The major benefits of organ meats are:

  • Good source of high-quality protein
  • Highly bioavailable vitamins and nutrients
  • Less expensive than steak

“From an evolutionary perspective, humans have consumed a lot of organ meats as their primary source of nutrients” Michael Kummer

Organ Meats vs. Plants

There is this belief that plants and fruits are healthier than any other foods, but Michael dismisses that notion.

The micronutrients in plants are not readily bioavailable as those in meats. From an evolutionary perspective, man has evolved to eat plants as a last resort due to this fact. They are an inferior source of nutrients. Compared to organ meats and seafood, plants are an inferior source of nutrients.

In addition to the poor absorption, plants have developed a chemical defense survival mechanism. These chemicals play a role in making the nutrient unavailable. Michael states that human beings have not yet evolved to the point of relying on plants for nutrients.
